My Delhi storms to victory on BBC’s Britain’s Top Takeaways
The street food favourite battled it out to win first place on the new BBC TV show.
Award-winning restaurant My Delhi, based on Clayton Street, Newcastle and soon with a new branch opening in Sunderland, went up against four of the nation’s top eateries to win the title of the best Indian on BBC Two’s Britain’s Top Takeaways.
The show, hosted by Sara Cox and comedian Darren Harriot, features a different cuisine in every episode, focusing on British classics like fish and chips, Indian food, and kebabs.
Each eatery is tasked with creating a small menu that is delivered to local households who score and judge the participants. Serving up their favourite dishes in the restaurant, Shah and Gaurav wowed the judges with their Railway Station Lamb Curry, Butter Chicken 1950s and Cauliflower Manchurian, with the latter two dishes receiving perfect scores in three of the five rounds, finishing eight points clear in the end.
The Cauliflower Manchurian, a favourite with its regulars, was praised by the judging families for being ‘well-balanced, stunning and different from Indian food they would normally have.’ Their signature dish of Butter Chicken 1950s is a dish they’re proud of with its Delhi roots. Guest judges from Manchester Village Spartans Rugby Club were impressed and scored My Delhi 10/10 after enjoying the creamy buttery dish.
My Delhi launched its successful takeaway operations during the pandemic to allow diners to continue enjoying their delicious food. This new accolade adds to the two they won last year for Best Street Food Restaurant of the Year by the Asian Curry Awards and English Curry Awards.
Shah and Gaurav, who were contacted last year to appear on the show, were delighted with their new accolade; Shah said, “It was a tough day but an absolutely amazing experience to be on the show and compete with some of the nation’s top eateries. We’re just so proud that we were able to fly the flag for the North East and impress the locals with our Delhi-cious food. We’re delighted that we can now take this back to the North East.
Chef Gaurav, who was confident with his Cauliflower Manchurian, said, “Now that we got a chance to watch it, it was great to see the reactions from the different households for the first time. We’ll have to look at opening a branch in Manchester now.”
Britain’s Top Takeaways continues on BBC Two on weekday nights, Monday to Thursday, at 8 pm, with episodes available on BBC iPlayer.
